CFISD swimmers, divers qualify for state championships

The Cy-Fair High School girls’ swim team won the Region V-6A team championship, winning the title with 274 points. The 2024 Region V-6A meet marks the third consecutive region team championship for Cy-Fair. 

Feb. 21, 2024—Thirteen CFISD athletes in 14 total events qualified for the UIL Swimming and Diving Championships following the Region V-6A Championships, held Feb. 8-10 at the CFISD Natatorium. CFISD athletes claimed seven regional titles overall.

The first- and second-place finishers in each region and next eight swimmers with the best regional finish times in the state advance to the UIL Swimming and Diving Championships, to be held Feb. 23-24 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. In diving, the top three finishers in each of the eight regions advance to state.

The Cy-Fair High School girls’ 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

The Cy-Fair High School girls’ 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, comprised of Maddie Nguyen, Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker and Sofia Luper, won both races at the Region V-6A Championships, held Feb. 8-10 at the CFISD Natatorium. The team set new CFISD Natatorium pool records in both events with times of (1:44.20) and (3:27.91), respectively. 

Cy-Fair senior Ella Smoker set a new Region V-6A record with her 200-yard individual medley time of 2:00.36.

Three new CFISD Natatorium pool records were set by CFISD swimmers at the Region V-6A meet:

  • Cy-Fair High School girls’ 200-yard medley relay – Maddie Nguyen, Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker and Sofia Luper (1:44.20);
  • Cy-Fair High School girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay – Maddie Nguyen, Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker and Sofia Luper (3:27.91); and
  • Cy-Fair senior Ella Smoker, 200-yard individual medley (2:00.36).

The Cy-Fair High School girls won the Region V-6A team championship with 274 points. The 2024 Region V-6A meet marked the third consecutive girls team championship for Cy-Fair. The Cypress Ranch High School girls scored 104 points to finish ninth overall.

Cy-Fair High School junior Sofia Luper, left, and Cy-Fair High School senior Ella Smoker, right, won three individual Region V-6A titles. Smoker won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke with times of (2:00.36) and (1:01.93), respectively. Luper won the 100-yard freestyle with the time of (50.24). Luper will also compete in the 200-yard individual medley at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Championships, to be held Feb. 23-24 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. 

The Bridgeland High School boys scored 165 points to finish fifth overall, while the Cypress Woods High school boys scored 110 points to finish 10th overall.

Cy-Fair Head Coach Hannah Doré was named the Region V-6A Girls’ Swim Coach of the Meet. CFISD Dive Coach Mandy Brush was named the Region V-6A Boys’ Team Dive Coach of the Meet and Region V-6A Co-Girls’ Team Dive Coach of the Meet. Cypress Woods senior Ben Romig was named the Region V-6A Male Diver of the Meet.

The following girls’ regional champions will represent CFISD at state:

  • Cy-Fair 200-yard medley relay – Maddie Nguyen, Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker and Sofia Luper (1:44.20);
  • Cy-Fair senior Ella Smoker,
    • 200-yard individual medley (2:00.36); and
    • 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.93).
  • Cy-Fair junior Sofia Luper, 100-yard freestyle (50.24);
  • Cy-Fair 400-yard freestyle relay – Maddie Nguyen, Amy Nguyen, Ella Smoker and Sofia Luper (3:27.91).

The following girls will also represent CFISD at state:

  • Cy-Fair senior Maddie Nguyen,
    • 200-yard freestyle (1:52.58); and
    • 100-yard backstroke (57.40).
  • Cy-Fair junior Sofia Luper, 200-yard individual medley (2:02.35);
  • Cy-Fair junior Amber Chien, 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.51);
  • Cypress Creek High School senior Makynna Smith, 100-yard butterfly (56.58); and
  • Cypress Woods senior Abigail Briggs, 500-yard freestyle (5:03.07).

Cypress Woods High School senior Ben Romig won the Region V-6A 1-Meter Diving championship with a score of 522.70.

Cypress Woods senior Ben Romig earned the Region V-6A 1-meter diving championship by scoring 522.70 points.

The following boys will also represent CFISD at state:

  • Bridgeland 200-yard medley relay – Henry Hugele, Jackson Hartzler, Alex Fenza and Zach Huffman (1:34.89);
  • Bridgeland freshman Jackson Hartzler, 200-yard individual medley (1:51.74);
  • Bridgeland senior Henry Hugele,
    • 100-yard butterfly (50.00); and
    • 100-yard backstroke (50.92).
  • Cypress Springs High School senior Caden Feith, 1-meter diving (440.00).
